Can Vinegar Help Control Blood Sugar?

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study found that body weight and belly fat were significantly reduced by adding just a single tablespoon of vinegar to one’s daily diet. Is there any benefit to vinegar consumption if you’re not overweight? Well, the subjects’ triglycerides normalized, and, for those taking the larger dose of two tablespoons per day, there was a dip in blood pressure. Those effects may have just been because of the weight loss, though. Other than taste, is there any benefit to normal-weight individuals sprinkling vinegar on their salads.

Older Adults' Forgetfulness Tied To Faulty Brain Rhythms In Sleep

The study was the result of an effort to understand how the sleeping brain turns short-term memories into memories that can last a lifetime, says Walker, the author of the book Why We Sleep. "What is it about sleep that seems to perform this elegant trick of cementing new facts into the neural architecture of the brain?"

To find out, Walker and a team of scientists had 20 young adults learn 120 pairs of words. "Then we put electrodes on their head and we had them sleep," he says.

The electrodes let researchers monitor the electrical waves produced by the brain during deep sleep. They focused on the interaction between slow waves, which occur every second or so, and faster waves called sleep spindles, which occur more than 12 times a second.

The next morning the volunteers took a test to see how many word pairs they could still remember. And it turned out their performance was determined by how well their slow waves and spindles had synchronized during deep sleep.

Oil from cinnamon drives fat cells to burn energy

Cinnamaldehyde, an essential oil that gives cinnamon its flavor, may improve metabolic health, researchers report.

The ingredient induces fat cells, or adipocytes, to start burning energy through a process called thermogenesis, the research finds.

Scientists had previously observed that cinnamaldehyde appeared to protect mice against obesity and hyperglycemia. But the mechanisms underlying the effect were not well understood.

Researchers in the lab of Jun Wu, research assistant professor at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute, wanted to better understand cinnamaldehyde’s action and determine whether it might be protective in humans, too

How the sugar industry tried to hide the health effects of its product 50 years ago

About 50 years ago, the sugar industry stopped funding research that began to show something they wanted to hide: that eating lots of sugar is linked to heart disease. A new study exposes the sugar industry’s decades-old effort to stifle that critical research.

Why Mushrooms May Be the Best Food to Help Fight Aging

New research reveals that mushrooms are “without a doubt” the highest known single source of the antioxidants ergothioneine and glutathione, which are both associated with anti-aging properties.

A team of researchers from Pennsylvania State University found that mushrooms are surprisingly full of both compounds, and that some of the 13 species they tested contained vastly higher levels than others. Common white button mushrooms, for instance, had low levels of the two antioxidants compared to some other mushrooms but still higher levels than your average non-mushroom food. The winner “by far” was the wild porcini mushroom, which is convenient since it’s also delicious. And even though some foods lose their health benefits when you cook them, the antioxidants in the mushrooms appear heat-stable and thus unaffected. The research was recently published in the journal Food Chemistry.

"There's a theory—the free radical theory of aging—that's been around for a long time that says when we oxidize our food to produce energy there's a number of free radicals that are produced that are side products of that action and many of these are quite toxic," said Robert Beelman, professor emeritus of food science and director of the Penn State Center for Plant and Mushroom Products for Health, in a Penn State news release. "The body has mechanisms to control most of them, including ergothioneine and glutathione, but eventually enough accrue to cause damage, which has been associated with many of the diseases of aging, like cancer, coronary heart disease and Alzheimer's."

Florida is trying to undo decades of damage to the Everglades

The state is embarking on such a massive restoration project because the aging levees and control gates surrounding Lake Okeechobee are at risk of failing during large storms and/or heavy rainfall. "The more rainwater that increases in Lake Okeechobee, the more pressure is on the lake, and that pressure can continue to build up and build up and build up and one day the levee can go," said Tammy Jackson-Moore, a Belle Glade resident who co-founded Guardians of the Glades, a nonprofit focused on community advocacy. "And we're talking about wiping out entire communities here." The rerouting has allowed for bursts of economic growth, but it does have its consequences. "The Everglades, the largest swath of subtropical wilderness in the country, is now half of its size circa 1920, and the ecosystem has deteriorated, losing wildlife and native flora," reports Motherboard. "Without a natural place to flow, stagnant water pushes toxic algae blooms into the rivers, and turns pristine ocean into sludgy waste."

Communism’s Bloody Century

"Communism entered history as a ferocious yet idealistic condemnation of capitalism, promising a better world. Its adherents, like others on the left, blamed capitalism for the miserable conditions that afflicted peasants and workers alike and for the prevalence of indentured and child labor. Communists saw the slaughter of World War I as a direct result of the rapacious competition among the great powers for overseas markets.
But a century of communism in power—with holdouts even now in Cuba, North Korea and China—has made clear the human cost of a political program bent on overthrowing capitalism. Again and again, the effort to eliminate markets and private property has brought about the deaths of an astounding number of people. Since 1917—in the Soviet Union, China, Mongolia, Eastern Europe, Indochina, Africa, Afghanistan and parts of Latin America—communism has claimed at least 65 million lives, according to the painstaking research of demographers."

Donors to anti-Trump 'resistance' group revealed

The hidden donors to a prominent anti-Trump "resistance" organization are revealed in unredacted tax forms obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The Center for Community Change, a Washington, D.C.-based 501 (c)(3) progressive community organizing group that does not reveal its donors, has been involved in direct action against President Donald Trump and Republicans before and after the November elections. The organization's members sit on the boards of other prominent liberal activist groups.

The Free Beacon has obtained the group's unredacted 2015 tax forms that shed light on its funders, who provide millions of dollars in assistance. The group appears to rely heavily on a few major liberal foundations, organizations, and unions.

The Center for Community Change's largest contribution was $3,000,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which was initially created by Will Kellogg, the food manufacturer and founder of Kellogg Company. The Ford Foundation added a $2,350,000 donation. The foundation was first created by the founders of the Ford Motor Company, but the company has had no affiliation with the foundation for nearly four decades. The Open Society Foundation, a foundation run by liberal billionaire mega-donor George Soros, gave $1,750,000 to the Center for Community Change.

Other donors to the organization include the California Endowment, which gave $524,500; the Marquerite Casey Foundation, which gave $515,000; Fidelity Charitable Gift, which donated $505,100; and the National Immigration Law Center, which gave $316,000.

NFL Hypocrisy on Free Speech

Flashback: NFL Players Threatened With Fines For Wearing Patriotic Cleats on 9/11

Social media was set ablaze after President Trump lashed out at NFL players protesting the national anthem on Friday while at a campaign rally for Senator Luther Strange (R-AL).

On Saturday, the NFL Commissioner lectured President Trump — not the jackass players kneeling during the national anthem.

“The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture,” Goodell said in a statement. “There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we’ve experienced over the last month.”

“Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.”

The NFL and the left are all of a sudden supporters of the 1st Amendment. They keep claiming that the NFL players have the First Amendment right to protest the national anthem if they so wish. Okay, great, and the consumers have a right to boycott.

Interestingly, the NFL threatened players with fines for wearing patriotic cleats on 9/11 in 2016. Why does Goodell have so much contempt for American patriotism?

Eating Purple Potatoes May Reduce Colon Cancer Risk

Purple foods have been trending this season and a lot of scientists and health experts have spoken about their miraculous health benefits. Keeping up with the trend, a new study conducted by Pennsylvania State University, finds that colourful foods such as purple potatoes, broccoli and red grapes may provide some amazing health benefits. It specifically claims that eating purple potatoes may reduce the risk of contracting colon cancer. Colon cancer is a type of cancer where malignant tumours develop in the inner wall of the large intestine.

The study was carried out using an animal model. The team conducted experiments on pigs and they found that animals who were fed more vegetables were six times less prone to contract inflammatory bowel diseases. Through the study, researchers tried to understand how the certain compounds in purple potatoes work and could be used to created drugs for cancer and other chronic ailments.

They chose to experiment on pigs as they have a similar digestive system to humans. They found that purple potatoes reduced the spread of colon cancer stem cells – even when they were given as a part of a high calorie diet. They found that the pigs fed with purple potatoes had six times less of a damaging protein called IL-6 (interleukin-6) that is known to fuel tumours in comparison to a control group that was given a normal diet.

According to Dr. Sheela Krishnaswamy, a renowned Bengaluru-based Nutritionist, 'Colours in a fruit or a vegetable reflect an important antioxidant in them. These foods are naturally pigmented and have certain health benefits added to them." Purple foods are known to be rich in antioxidants that fight disease-causing free radicals. Purple foods have this natural purple pigment due to an antioxidant called anthocyanin. The darker the colour, the higher is the amount of this antioxidant that it contains.

Dogs’ Love of Man Is Real

They do studies to prove the most obvious things.

Berns and his team confirmed this through a host of tests that looked at different centers of the doggie brain and how they responded to different stimuli. In one test they alternated between giving the pooches hot dogs (the food, not Dachshunds) and offering them praise. Looking at the pleasure centers of the dogs’ brains, the researchers found that nearly all the dogs responded to “Who’s a good boy?! You are!” (or whatever they actually said) with at least as much pleasure as when they got a Hebrew National. A fifth of the dogs actually preferred praise to food.

Eating meat linked to higher risk of diabetes

While a plant-based diet is generally considered healthier than a meat-based diet in preventing the risk of diabetes, not all meats affect the risk equally. As Professor Koh Woon Puay, Professor of Clinical Sciences at Duke-NUS Medical School (Duke-NUS), and her team found out, higher intake of red meat and poultry is associated with significantly increased risk of developing diabetes, which is partially attributed to their higher content of heme iron in these meats. This study provides the basis for evidence-based dietary recommendations to the Singapore population in mitigating diabetes risk and reducing the healthcare burden of this chronic condition.

These findings come from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, which recruited 63,257 adults aged 45-74 years between 1993 and 1998, and then followed them up for an average of about 11 years. The study found a positive association between intakes of red meat and poultry, and risk of developing diabetes. Specifically, compared to those in the lowest quartile intake, those in the highest quartile intake of red meat and poultry had a 23 per cent and 15 per cent increase in risk of diabetes, respectively, while the intake of fish/shellfish was not associated with risk of diabetes. The increase in risk associated with red meat/poultry was reduced by substituting them with fish/shellfish.

In trying to understand the underlying mechanism for the role of red meat and poultry in the development of diabetes, the study also investigated the association between dietary heme-iron content from all meats and the risk of diabetes, and found a dose-dependent positive association. After adjusting for heme-iron content in the diet, the red-meat and diabetes association was still present, suggesting that other chemicals present in red meat could be accountable for the increase in risk of diabetes. Conversely, the association between poultry intake and diabetes risk became null, suggesting that this risk was attributable to the heme-iron content in poultry.

This is one of the largest Asian studies looking at meat consumption and diabetes risk. While the findings are consistent with other Western studies that have shown that the increased intake of red meat and increase in heme-iron content of diet could increase the risk of diabetes, this study demonstrated the additional risk of red meat attributable to other possible chemicals, other than its heme-iron content. It also suggested that chicken parts with lower heme-iron contents such as breast meat, compared to thighs, could be healthier. Finally, the study also demonstrated the benefit of replacing red meat or poultry with fish/shellfish.

Describing the key take home message for the public, senior author of the study Professor Koh said, "We don't need to remove meat from the diet entirely. Singaporeans just need to reduce the daily intake, especially for red meat, and choose chicken breast and fish/shellfish, or plant-based protein food and dairy products, to reduce the risk of diabetes. At the end of the day, we want to provide the public with information to make evidence-based choices in picking the healthier food to reduce disease risk."

"Although a number of western studies have consistently shown that red meat consumption should be moderated, this study is highly relevant as it is based on local population and consumption patterns. The findings affirm HPB's recommendation to consume red meat in moderation, and that a healthy and balanced diet should contain sufficient and varied protein sources, including healthier alternatives to red meat such as fish, tofu and legumes," said Dr Annie Ling, Director, Policy, Research and Surveillance Division, Health Promotion Board.

Harvey and Irma, Married 75 Years, Marvel at the Storms Bearing Their Names

Harvey and Irma Schluter have been married for 75 years. He turned 104 in July; she will be 93 in November.

They vividly remember many of the major events of the 20th century, from her first time spotting an airplane, during the Great Depression, to his wonder at watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. In a recent phone interview, Mrs. Schluter even recalled the weather near her home in Spokane, Wash., on the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. (Cool and cloudy.)

But never before have they seen two major hurricanes bearing their names threaten the United States

NFL Players Protesting the Flag

Friends and family,

I received the email below this morning.  I would ask that you all read it. It is powerful. Then I would ask that you all forward it to everyone on your email list that you believe even give a ** anymore just I have. Further, I would hope that every one of us would refuse to watch any and all NFL games or any professional sports that encourage or condone this crap until they change it. I’m sick of these overpaid “sports heroes” and the influence they have on so many in this country especially the younger generations. If you will all forward this email to all of your contacts, and then those folks to theirs, and those to theirs and so on, we could reach millions.  I know there are many that will not follow through but if half or better do it, it would put the NFL in a pinch.  We all sit around and do nothing while we let the few ruin our country.  Lets try this and see what happens.  WE CAN BOYCOTT TOO!! Screw these protestors. If we aren’t watching then the advertisers will give a hard look and start pressuring them to knock it off.  Lets try it and see if it works.

Joe

I love the game but this sums up why I seldom watch it anymore.  A bunch of thugs covered with tattoo's and wild hairdo's have become far to influential over our children.  In fact our whole society.

Ret. Marine Col. Jeffery Powers wrote to the NFL commissioners the following:

Commissioners, I’ve been a season pass holder at Yankee Stadium, Yale Bowl and the Giants Stadium.

I missed the ’90-’91 season because I was with a battalion of Marines in Desert Storm. 14 of my wonderful Marines returned home with the American Flag draped across their lifeless bodies. My last conversation with one of them, Sgt. Garrett Mongrella was about how our Giants were going to the Super Bowl. He never got to see it.

Many friends, Marines, and Special Forces Soldiers who worked with or for me through the years returned home with the American Flag draped over their coffins.

Now I watch multi-millionaire athletes who never did anything in their lives but play a game, disrespect what brave Americans fought and died for. They are essentially spitting in the faces and on the graves of real men, men who have actually done something for this country besides playing with a ball and believing they’re something special! They’re not! My Marines and Soldiers were!

You are complicit in this! You’ll fine players for large and small infractions but you lack the moral courage and respect for our nation and the fallen to put an immediate stop to this. Yes, I know, it’s their 1st Amendment right to behave in such a despicable manner.

What would happen if they came out and disrespected you or the refs publicly?

I observed a player getting a personal foul for twerking in the end zone after scoring. I guess that’s much worse than disrespecting the flag and our National  Anthem. Hmmmmm, isn’t it his 1st Amendment right to express himself like an idiot in the end zone?

Why is taunting not allowed yet taunting America is OK? You fine players for wearing 9-11 commemorative shoes yet you allow scum on the sidelines to sit, kneel or pump their pathetic fist in the air. They are so deprived with their multi-million dollar contracts for playing a freaking game!

You condone it all by your refusal to act. You’re just as bad and disgusting as they are. I hope Americans boycott any sponsor who supports that rabble you call the NFL. I hope they turn off the TV when any team that allowed this disrespect to occur, without consequence, on the sidelines. I applaud those who have not.

Legends and heroes do NOT wear shoulder pads. They wear body armor and carry rifles
They make minimum wage and spend months and years away from their families. They don’t do it for an hour on Sunday. They do it 24/7 often with lead, not footballs, coming in their direction. They watch their brothers carted off in pieces not on a gurney to get their knee iced. They don’t even have ice! Many don’t have legs or arms.

Some wear blue and risk their lives daily on the streets of America. They wear fire helmets and go upstairs into the fire rather than down to safety. On 9-11, hundreds vanished. They are the heroes.

I hope that your high paid protesting pretty boys and you look in that mirror when you shave tomorrow and see what you really are, legends in your own minds. You need to hit the road and take those worms with you!

Time to change the channel.

Powers originally sent his letter to former Florida congressman Allen West
.
West then posted the letter on his news website.

As of last week, at least 18 NFL player had protested the anthem by either kneeling during the anthem or raising their fists, according to USA Today Sports.

The Atlantic claims the eclipse is racist

This is a serious article. According to the Atlantic, the eclipse is racist because not enough black people live along it's path.

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.

Starbucks CEO Suggests Violence and Hatred Towards Whites is Acceptable

Howard Schultz is a disgrace. He recently came under fire for saying he was going to hire thousands of Muslim refugees over Americans/Veterans. He continues to side with the violent leftists by refusing to condemn Antifa, Black Lives Matter and Islamic terrorists.

Greater consumption of vegetables may delay cognitive decline by 5 years

Greater consumption of vegetables was associated with slower rate of cognitive decline over 6 years in this large community-based population of older persons. The decrease in rate for persons who consumed greater than two vegetable servings per day was equivalent to about 5 years of younger age. Of the different types of vegetables, green leafy vegetables had the strongest association. Fruit consumption was not associated with cognitive change.

 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3393520/pdf/nihms384896.pdf

Berry intake may delay cognitive aging by up to 2.5 years.

Greater intakes of blueberries and strawberries were associated with slower rates of cognitive decline (e.g., for a global score averaging all six cognitive tests, for blueberries: p-trend=0.014 and mean difference=0.04 [95% CI=0.01, 0.07] comparing extreme categories of intake; for strawberries: p-trend= 0.022 and mean difference=0.03 [95% CI=0.00, 0.06] comparing extreme categories of intake), after adjusting for multiple potential confounders. These effect estimates were equivalent to those we find for approximately 1.5 to 2.5 years of age in our cohort, indicating that berry intake appears to delay cognitive aging by up to 2.5 years. Additionally, in further supporting evidence, greater intakes of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids were associated with slower rates of cognitive decline (p-trends= 0.015 and 0.053, respectively, for the global score).

Interpretation—Higher intake of flavonoids, particularly from berries, appears to reduce rates of cognitive decline in older adults.

“There's a lot of research out there that shows a diet that includes almonds lowers low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease,” Penny Kris-Etherton, a nutrition professor at the university, said about the study. “But not as much was known about how almonds affect HDL cholesterol, which is considered good cholesterol and helps lower your risk of heart disease.”

TELLING LIES ABOUT LADY LIBERTY

Much of the debate about immigration policy is driven by myth rather than reality. The most egregious of these myths surround the Statue of Liberty. And they play a significant role in the war on immigration enforcement being waged by the open borders lobby.

On Tuesday evening, March 7, 2017, the National Park Service briefly turned out the lights on Lady Liberty in order to replace faulty electrical equipment. The next morning the mainstream media was filled with stories claiming that the power outage was symbolic. CNN proclaimed “Statue of Liberty Goes Dark, Lights Up – and the Symbolism Is Not Lost.”  It also cited the poem on the base of the statue as, “a clear argument against President Donald Trump’s travel ban and immigration crackdowns.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Post trumpeted “The Statue of Liberty Went Dark Overnight and the Timing Was Just ‘Too Perfect,’”, claiming that “Lady Liberty was… protesting President Trump generally and, more specifically, his travel ban just a day after he signed the revised executive order limiting entry to the United States from six Muslim-majority countries.”

But these protests are based on a flawed argument. The Statue of Liberty has nothing to do with immigration. In fact, she was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, to commemorate the centennial of American independence and the influence of the founding fathers on French revolutionary ideals.  Her full name, Liberty Enlightening the World more accurately reflects her true purpose, championing the worldwide diffusion of the republican form of government. She is, metaphorically speaking, a symbol of liberty as an influential emigrant – an encouragement to those who would seek democracy at home, not those seeking a new homeland.

She became entwined with immigration in the popular imagination due to her physical proximity to Ellis Island and a poem affixed to her base.  That sonnet, called The New Colossus, was written by Emma Lazarus, a wealthy socialist poet popular in early 1900’s New York literary circles, and auctioned off as part of the campaign to raise funds for the pedestal on which the statue was erected. Nevertheless, open borders advocates have imbued it with the same significance as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  They are mistaken. The United States has always been welcoming to newcomers. But liberty under the rule of law has always been our core principle – not immigration.

Lazarus’ poem implies that immigration is what made America great. Yet, in reality, it has always been American greatness that attracted immigrants. Auguste Bartholdi understood this. That’s why he built Liberty Enlightening the World and gave her to the United States. If Lady Liberty was protesting anything when her lights went out, it was probably the way in which her history has been distorted not President Trump’s efforts to preserve ordered liberty in the face of terror.

Millennials Unearth an Amazing Hack to Get Free TV: the Antenna

Dan Sisco has discovered a technology that allows him to access half a dozen major TV channels, completely free. "I was just kind of surprised that this is technology that exists (alternative source)," says Mr. Sisco, 28 years old. "It's been awesome. It doesn't log out and it doesn't skip." Let's hear a round of applause for TV antennas, often called "rabbit ears," a technology invented roughly seven decades ago, long before there was even a cord to be cut, which had been consigned to the technology trash can along with cassette tapes and VCRs. The antenna is mounting a quiet comeback, propelled by a generation that never knew life before cable television, and who primarily watch Netflix , Hulu and HBO via the internet. Antenna sales in the U.S. are projected to rise 7 percent in 2017 to nearly 8 million units, according to the Consumer Technology Association, a trade group. Mr. Sisco, an M.B.A. student in Provo, Utah, made his discovery after inviting friends over to watch the Super Bowl in 2014. The online stream he found to watch the game didn't have regular commercials -- disappointing half of his guests who were only interested in the ads. "An antenna was not even on my radar," he says. He went online and discovered he could buy one for $20 and watch major networks like ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS free.

No matter how many times you say it, there is still no actual evidence

RIP June Foray

She was 99 years old, and was working until 2014.

Probably best know for the voices of Natasha Fatale, and Rocky the flying squirrel.

Her roles numbered in the hundreds. She was Granny from a treasure-trove of Looney Tunes’ Tweety and Sylvester cartoons and “Space Jam.” She was Grandmother Fa in Disney’s “Mulan.” And she was Cindy Lou Who in the ’60s Dr. Seuss classic, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

Outside the recording booth, Ms. Foray was a force as well, helping to found the animation industry’s Annie Awards and to push for the creation of the Oscars’ animated feature category. She also was an original member of the animation organization ASIFA-Hollywood.

Coconut Oil, Saturated Fat, and Your Health

A panel of a dozen well-known and respected researchers from Harvard, Tufts, Northwestern, and other universities was asked to review older and recent research on the relationship between foods higher in saturated fats, like meat, butter, cheese, and dairy, and heart disease risk.

Given the news coverage, you might have thought that all the American Heart Association addressed was the topic of coconut oil. Hardly a whimper has been heard in the press about the detailed analysis concluding that reducing foods rich in animal saturated fats and replacing them with plant-based substitutes, particularly as it relates to choosing a vegetable oil over butter or lard, was the most important recommendation.

Media seemed to zero in on a single paragraph that said, “because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD, and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil.”

That was it—just 25 words and four scientific references out of thousands of words, 25 pages, and nearly 200 references included in the document.

Islam is having Christian churches torn down all over Europe

This is something Islam has done since the prophet Mohammad walked the earth. Only this time, Europe has no problem with this happening. Anybody who complains is called a racist.

'Oh well, if you are going to behave like that...'

Seriously: although these videos are cute, I would never trust a cat around my pet bird. Cats and birds have a predator-prey relationship.
